Insulating Concrete Forms: Comparative Thermal Performance
This report will allow builders to better evaluate the energy saving impacts of
Insulating Concrete Forms (ICFs) and identifies many opportunities to optimize
the construction of homes using this technology. It compares the thermal
performance of homes built using ICF walls to conventional wood-frame exterior
walls. The NAHB Research Center designed and monitored construction of three
houses-two with ICFs and one with conventional 2x4 wood-framing-and recorded
thermal performance during a one-year period during which the homes remained
unoccupied. The report contains impacts of ICFs and identifies many
opportunities to optimize the construction of homes using this technology.
