Roof Framing Connections in Conventional Residential Construction
This study documents the structural behavior of key framing connections in
conventional roof systems. Loading conditions included shear loads on
roof-to-wall connections using various toe-nails and an enhanced connection
using a simple roof tie clip. Heel joint connections of rafter-ceiling joist
assemblies were also tested and analyized. Tests were conducted of systems as
well as individual joints to evaluate system effects relative to element based
design practice. Recommendations are made to improve design practice by
changing wood connections design to a capacity basis as well as other
modifications that better represent the type of connection conditions addressed
in this study.
