Public Relations Specialist

The NAHB Research Center is seeking a Public Relations Specialist responsible for developing and executing effective internal and external strategic communications plans to help the company achieve its vision and business goals. Uses strategic thinking, creativity, and outstanding interpersonal communications skills to implement successful media relations, website, and other external communications initiatives to strengthen the company's brand, increase awareness, and influence key constituencies. Responsibility will include day-to-day activities of communications, public affairs, community relations, corporate communications, and media relations.

Will assist the Director of Communications in developing, executing, and managing an effective corporate public relations program, and will anticipate industry issues and provide advice and counsel to other departments on creating effective communications. Ability to analyze and measure media results and apply findings to future strategic communication and marketing planning is important.

The Public Relations Specialist will also assist in the writing and editing of printed and electronic newsletters and produce other promotional and marketing collateral materials as requested. Will serve as one of the company’s primary writing and editing resources, and may be called upon on occasion to serve as corporate spokesperson. Tasks will include preparing and distributing press releases, pitching stories, responding to media queries, writing talking points and event scripts, and developing timely and business-driven web content. Must also plan, coordinate, and execute special events, and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in public relations, journalism, communications, or related field and a minimum of four years experience in writing, editing, and public relations either in an agency or in-house communications department. Experience in successfully placing news stories, working with reporters, and handling media inquiries is required. Experience developing and implementing strategic marketing campaigns; working with an outside PR agency; working in an association; and proven track record with trade publications a plus. Basic understanding of effective photography, graphic design, and publication layout a plus. Candidate must have proficiency in developing and implementing short and long range strategies that achieve measurable results; ability to translate technical and/or complex information into messages that can be easily understood and that influence others; ability to simultaneously manage multiple priorities and deal with ambiguity. Must be articulate, at ease with public speaking, highly motivated, detail oriented, well organized, flexible, and have the ability to work on several projects simultaneously to meet deadlines. Minimal travel to trade shows and annual meetings may be required. Examples of strategic plans, press releases, press kits, and background material requested.
